DESCRIPTION

By 1998, and with Aston Martin’s future secured by the success of the DB7, the intention to create an all new Aston Martin ‘supercar’ for the 21st century was launched under the codename Project Vantage. It aimed to continue the Aston tradition of brutish good looks and blistering performance whilst showcasing the direction that Aston was taking. Penned by Ian Callum and drawing inspiration from the DB4 Zagato, the concept car’s aggressive stance evolved directly into the V12 Vanquish. It featured an advanced carbon fibre and alloy structure whilst Aston Martin's most powerful V12 engine to date propelled the car from 0 to 60mph in under five seconds. Only available with a 6-speed automated manual transmission, the interior, whilst still trimmed in the finest leather, saw the wood veneers replaced with brushed aluminium. The Vanquish was Aston’s flagship between 2001 and 2007 and was the last model to be produced at the Newport Pagnell Works.

Whilst order books were filling, the reality of bringing a brand new car to market was taken seriously at Newport Pagnell. As an all-new model, and subject to strict regulations, a total of 78 prototype cars were built. Some of these were simply rolling chassis for design development, others were part of a rigorous ‘crash testing’ program and others remained as bodyshells to be used for interior trim studies. We are grateful to Tim Cottingham, the Registrar and Trustee of the Aston Martin Heritage Trust, for his insight into the provenance of the car that we are offering today.

The final batch of 22 PP (pre-production) cars either became fascinating incarnations or later scrapped test models, the known survivors are therefore historic in their significance. When Aston Martin returned to the James Bond franchise in the 2002 film Die Another Day, EON Productions took delivery of four PP-chassis Vanquishes, all heavily modified for filming. Three are known to have survived and are usually displayed as part of the Bond franchise’s memorabilia, but none are understood to be road legal or ever likely to appear on the open market. Another one of the PP cars became the radical Bertone-penned ‘Jet 2’ concept shooting-brake whilst yet another was converted by Zagato to roadster specification, a car so beautiful it’s a travesty that it was never put into production.

As of today, no other pre-production V12 Vanquish is known to be road registered and the conclusion is that this car, chassis number #PP09, is the earliest and only road registered PP-chassis Vanquish that’s likely to be offered to market. Whilst visitors to the British Motor Musuem at Gaydon have the opportunity to see chassis number #PP10, we have the honour to offer its sister to the market.

Finished in Skye Silver with a black leather interior, #PP09 was first registered to its sole and only keeper, Aston Martin Lagonda, on the 28th February 2001 as “X36 XJO”. Like most pre-productions cars, it was built in left-hand drive to attract the European market at car shows. We are informed that it was on display at the Newport Pagnell factory for many years and the accompanying Aston Martin maintenance history confirms the low odometer reading of just 642 kilometres at the time of cataloguing. The history file documents the car’s journey from a pre-production prototype to the road car it is today with the DVLA listing it as #SCFAC23391B50PP09 and confirming Aston Martin Lagonda as the sole registered keeper.

With its status confirmed by the Aston Martin Heritage Trust and the aforementioned factory records accompanied by a signed letter from Aston Martin Works, this car’s provenance is unquestioned. Offering the unique opportunity of owning a virtually brand new 2001 V12 Vanquish showing delivery mileage, this beautifully presented and historically important motorcar is worthy of any collection, with an estimate that should draw serious attention.

Any cars not collected by 2pm on Monday 22^nd May will be taken to EM Rogers storage facility in Northampton for a fee of £175 + VAT. Storage will be charged at £10 + VAT per day from the Monday onwards.

A member of the administration team will contact you to confirm your transport plans after the auction. If we do not hear back from you by 9am on Monday 22^nd May, we will arrange for our transport partners to collect the vehicle on your behalf.

Automobilia

Automobilia can be collected from the auction hall on the day of the auction, between 9.30am and 5pm on Sunday 21^st May or on Monday 22^nd May between 9am and midday by prior appointment. After this time, it can be collected from our offices in Warwickshire or shipped to you at your expense.
