The Mitsubishi 3000GT, known as the ‘GTO’ globally, and sold as the ‘Dodge Stealth’ in the US, was launched in October 1990 and was described as Mitsubishi’s "new age super four-wheel drive sports car". Following on from the high-tech Sapporo saloon of the late 1980s, with its clever adaptive suspension, and its sportier contemporary, the turbocharged Starion coupé, it was perhaps unsurprising that, in 1991, Mitsubishi launched the 3000GT in the UK, available in top VR4-spec level only.
With its four-wheel steering, four-wheel drive, electronically controlled damping and, under that sculpted bonnet, a twin-turbocharged 24-valve 3.0-litre V6, it should have had UK sales folk clamouring for fresh supplies, however, a high price and the dealers’ inability to sell anything but Shoguns meant too many GTs kept showrooms company.
The UK-spec 3000GT may have been expensive but it wanted for little. Whereas the Japanese GTO could be bought in naturally aspirated or turbocharged forms, with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic gearbox and cloth or leather trim, the UK 3000GT just ticked the boxes that mattered. So, as standard, it had that twin-turbo V6, a Getrag 5-speed manual gearbox and all four occupants enjoyed leather trim. Pop-up headlights and active front and rear spoilers completed the package.
Thanks to its full-time four-wheel drive, the GTO delivered superb handling and stability. This four-wheel-drive driveline used a viscous coupling centre differential and was able to transmit all the engine torque to the road surface boasting a front/rear torque split of 45:55. The GT also featured MacPherson-strut front suspension and a double-wishbone arrangement at the rear with damping controlled electronically whilst the four-wheel steering system turned the rear wheels in the same direction as the front wheels at mid to high-speed, all adding to the car’s superb driveability.
The facelift in 1994 exchanged the pop-up headlights for projector-style units, power output was now 296bhp (in VR4 form) and the manual gearbox became a 6-speed unit. This Mk2 version endured until the model was dropped in the UK in 1999.
The car presented here is a genuine UK-supplied 3000GT (chassis number begins JMAMJZ16A), first registered on the 20th January 1999, and is in remarkable condition and still in factory specification, having been owned by marque enthusiasts.
Delivered new to its first owner in Southam, Warwickshire, costing £45,625, its accompanying original service booklet shows main dealer servicing from 609 miles right through to 22,807 miles, with then two services at independent garages, the last being £1,043 spent in November 2019 at just over 31,000 miles. With two keys and a history file that suggests very diligent ownership (tyre type/pressures & oil type etc. written down, Tracker and Cobra alarm fitted etc.), this is a super example, and offered at 'No Reserve'.
A last-year-of-UK-production 3000GT is rare, even more so in such original condition and with so few miles covered and, according to a UK 3000 GT specialist, this particular car is perhaps the lowest-mileage, most original example out there. With much paperwork to verify its mileage and a condition wholly commensurate with the indicated 35,000 miles, this is a hugely capable and rare car that's currently undervalued and consequently may prove a sound investment.
