The second-generation Focus RS is the Focus that Ford originally claimed they would never build – a limited-run 300bhp, 'super-hatch'. But we’re delighted they did, and make no apology for being enthusiastic about this remarkable little car with its huge twin-blade spoiler at the back, aggressive body kit, and ballistic performance (0-60 in 4.7secs /163mph) from the turbocharged 2.5-litre, 5-cylinder engine. The most controversial aspect of the car was its drivetrain, which remained front, not four-wheel drive. Ford's engineers developed and patented a system called the "Revo-Knuckle" which was designed to eliminate torque-steer by keeping the kingpin offset angle consistent even under heavy load, and with 301bhp and a massive 324lbs.ft available, that was most of the time. The chassis was stiffened by about 30% and bigger driveshafts, a wider track, lower ride height, and a quicker steering rack translated into remarkably civilised road manners. In the raw, the RS looks a bit of a 'beastie'. With its gaping grille, 19-inch wheels, flared arches, deep diffuser, and a wing that would embarrass a Porsche Turbo, the RS leaves you in no doubt about its intentions. However, it's still a Ford Focus and is good to drive, easy to park, has plenty of boot space, and is reasonably quiet at a constant speed.
Finished in Ultimate Green, this 2009 Focus RS Mk2 has had a full main dealer service (Arnold Clark and Stoneacre Ford - 11 stamps) carried out every year of its life and has still only covered 16,558 miles. In 2019, at 16,478 miles it had the ‘big service’ that included cambelt and water pump schedules. This is the rarer, more focussed specification void of the 'Lux Pack' and specifically optioned without dated technology sat nav in the ethos of Ford Motorsport simplicity. Certainly one of the best examples that we have seen, it's in remarkably original and gleaming showroom condition. The Lime Green canvas, Sage Green Alcantara and leather RS Recaro interior appears unmarked, as do the wheels and the OE fit tyres are 6-7mm. It comes with all manuals, two keys with the service key and its unused Ford Continental puncture repair kit.
All in all, this represents the chance to buy a drivers specification Focus RS Mk2 in the best colour, with two previous owners, service record, receipts and all MOTs with the current valid until August 2021.
This is a comparatively new vehicle for a classic car auction house but the demand for sporting Fords, no matter what vintage, seems to continue unabated and in this rare spec with very low mileage, be sure not to miss out on this amazing example.
