The Birmingham Superprix Podcast is a new platform under The Birmingham Superprix Project.
The project is ran voluntarily out of nothing but passion for the history of the event, focusing on preserving the history of Britain’s first, and to date only, legal street race.
Since 2015 the project has converted original print, slide & film photographs & VHS footage to digital format, while developing an online community via Instagram, Facebook & Twitter as well as staging events around the Superprix. Past events have included an exhibition at Autosport International & an anniversary event featuring original vehicles, guest speakers & memorabilia on display.
Recent media coverage of the project includes the Emirates’ on board flight magazine Open Skies , The Birmingham Post , Birmingham Mail, Birmingham Live & ITV Central .
The podcast part of the project has been developed during the UK’s recent lockdown period. We wanted to bring some positivity to the households of our community during uncertain times & go deeper into the stories behind the event than ever before.
The initial 4 episodes include conversations with key figures who played a huge role both behind the scenes & trackside at the event, each around 30-45 minutes long; from event organisers, former-racing drivers, commentators & photographers.
Never before have the public been able to gain such a detailed insight into the race, which ran from 1986-1990, from so many different perspectives.
Guests on the podcast have re-lived moments from the Birmingham race such as dealing with Bernie Ecclestone to make the race a reality, commentating alongside Nigel Mansell, racing on the same grid as Damon Hill, Jean Alesi, Mika Hakkinen, Allan McNish & Tim Harvey , as well as remembering the pre-Superprix motoring events, created to raise support for a road race that featured Juan Manuel Fangio, Jackie Stewart, James Hunt, Sir Stirling Moss & Sir Jack Brabham .
The series is hosted by motorsports commentator Jake Sanson.
We are now preparing to release Episodes 5, 6 & 7 which will feature Nick Whale, Ben Edwards & James Allen - all of whom were involved with The Birmingham Superprix - ever Friday from the 17th July.
The episodes have also been kindly sponsored by Silverstone Auctions.
Three more episodes are currently in the final stages of post-production & include interviews with Martin Donnelly, Mark Blundell & Simon Arron and will be available in August.
