DESCRIPTION

The Indy, Tipo 116, bodywork by Vignale was first shown in 4.2 litre form at the Turin Motor show on the Vignale stand in 1968, and at the Geneva Show on the Maserati stand in 1969. Launched as a comfortable four-seater grand tourer with good luggage space with a speed in excess of 150 mph. In 1972 the engine was increased to 4.7 litres developing 290 bhp, power steering and air conditioning were a standard fitting. Production of Maserati cars was low and only made to order. In 1972 only 246 cars made, 1973 another 221, and in 1974 the 4.9 litre engine was used with 47 cars produced. In total only 1136 Indys were made in all forms.

This UK supplied right hand drive car was first registered on 28/6/1972 to a Mr Jim Dryden in Dundee. It was sold on 8th July 1975 to its second owner Mr Jessie Sharp Cooper in Essex. The last 3 owners have kept the car on average 5 years each and the prior owner 15 years between 1984 until 1999.

The car is complete with recent invoices and additional invoices dating back to 1984. It also includes more invoices from DK Engineering and Joe Macari between 2002 and 2006 and an incomplete series of MOT certificates also dating back to 1984.It was featured in the February 2010 Classic Cars magazine in the Maserati Indy buyers guide in it's unrestored state and colour. A copy of the magazine is included in the history file. For the last 18 months the car has been the subject of a major restoration including a full, bare metal respray. The body shell was found to be in very good condition but any areas of corrosion were replaced and repaired. The car was resprayed the current colour of metallic Rosso Corsa and the interior completely re-trimmed in new ivory leather with red detail stitching, new red carpets and new seat belts front and rear. When the dashboard was taken out some of the connections to the fuseboard were found to be faulty and these where renewed along with some new switches. At the same time the clock was rebuilt. A new radio, speakers and aerial were fitted at this time, which also, very discretely, provides bluetooth hands-free phone connection and USB iPhone charging and interface. After the bodywork and interior work were completed the car underwent significant mechanical work including a rebuilt rear diff, rebuilt all brake calipers, new brake pads and rear brake lines, cams removed and new shims installed to ensure correct valve clearance and ensure good compression on all cylinders. Finally the carbs cleaned and rebalanced, major service, renew filters and air con re-gassed.
