This pretty Lotus Elite was first supplied to well-known BRDC member and racer, the late Max Payne and he was to own it from new all the way until 2010, racing it extensively.
The car featured some unique Works modifications including a re-profiled nose, no front bumpers, a NACA duct on the bonnet, a Plexiglass rear window, stripped out interior and an Aston filler cap. Today the car also features various modifications which include: Engine upgraded to 1460 cc, a race manifold, double Weber carbs (original production), a roll-cage, a Tillet race seat with full harness and belts, a quick-release steering wheel, 5-inch wire wheels, Avon ZZ tyres, and fully adjustable Toleman suspension. (not FIA spec but making the car drive superbly and easily changed back to original spec)
The original registered owner of UMH 3 was Maxwell Payne of Four Oaks, Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands and it remained with him from 12.02.1960 until 19.03.2010, some fifty years and five weeks. Documents show that Max restored the car in 1980/81 with a colour change to white (CD pictures confirm). He took the car off the road from 1982 onwards and sold the UMH 3 registration to the owner of a Land Rover. Max re-registered the Lotus on 23.09.2009 as BOA 954A and subsequently sold the little Elite to its second owner, a Mr John Baker from Bourton on the Water, who was the proud possessor between 19.03.2010 and 22.08.2016.
Mr Baker changed the registration to the historic plate 995 XXU in 2010 and started a full rebuild of the car with the work being carried out by the well-known specialist, Andrew Tart, between 2010-2016. During this time the crankshaft was replaced to enlarge the capacity to 1460cc (the original crankshaft is still with the car). It’s important to note that the restoration was a full nut and bolt, but avoided replacement parts wherever possible, rather rebuilding original parts to maintain originality wherever possible. When the car was finally finished and had covered less than 3,000 miles, Mr Baker sold the car to its third owner, our private German vendor.
Although the export slip was submitted to the DVLA by the previous owner our vendor chose not to officially import the car to Germany, or have it registered there, as he decided to only use the car for track-day events and so trailered the car to and from racetracks in the U.K., Holland and Germany. To prepare the car for circuit use it was further stripped out, removing the rear bumper and installing up to date safety equipment like a Tillet seat and full race harness and belts. He installed wider 5-inch wire wheels with new Avon tyres, equipped the engine with original Weber carbs and installed complete new Toleman suspension which is fully adjustable. The engine has been tuned on a rolling road with just one track-day completed since, and the rolling road performance data is available with the car. The car was fully serviced including all fluid changes after just one track-day on 02.09.2020. The total mileage covered as a track-day car is well below 1,000 miles. So, in total, the car has done less than 4,000 miles since its full rebuild. Included with this lot is a Humbaur trailer bespoke built to carry the Lotus.
All original parts, like the black interior, the original wheels, bumper, crankshaft etc. are available with the car, so it can be converted back to a fast-road spec or turned into a full-house FIA Racecar.
The car and trailer are being sold in absentia and are available to be viewed in Berlin, Germany. There will be no import VAT due for buyers in the EU.
Now that the UK has left the EU, import VAT at 5% will be payable by buyers importing this lot from Germany to the UK at the time of import. It is the responsibility of the buyer to settle these additional charges. Please contact our transport partners, EM Rogers, if you would like assistance with shipping.
