SUMMARY

This 1923 Hooper built 20hp is accompanied by an extensive history file and is a previous prize winner at 2019 Rolls-Royce National Rally – an early 3-speed, rear-brake only example of connoisseurs quality, unrepeatable.

DESCRIPTION

Produced between 1922-1929, the 20hp was Rolls-Royce's smallest offering in the 1920s. Despite being produced for the owner-driver, the car proved popular with chauffeur-driven customers and was built by a selection of coachbuilders including Park Ward, Mulliner, Barker, Thrupp & Maberly, and Hooper. This 1923 Hooper-bodied example, 77A6, is accompanied by a fascinating history file which indicates that it was first registered to a Mrs Emily Hurst of Haslemere, Surrey, who later sold the car to the Stephens family of 'Quink' Ink fame. They owned the car for many years until it was then sold to Mr Ivan Odds from Kent, who added it to his extensive collection of Rolls-Royces (and where it was used for film, TV and weddings).

It spent ten years with the owner prior to our vendor and was maintained and serviced in accordance with Rolls-Royce recommendations. During his ownership, work included a complete rewire, renewed Landaulette hood with correct grained leather, overhauled Autovac and two new Blockley tyres. In the interests of safety, sensitively positioned indicator flashers were fitted and, as a nod to modern times. a discreet USB plug was fitted under the dashboard for SatNav or phone charging. The original fitment 'Dictograph Communicator' is still in situ, and pleasingly was restored at that time and is now in working order – "Home James and don't spare the horses!"  In splendid condition all round, 77A6 was awarded first place at the 2019 Rolls-Royce National Rally with a rosette and documents to verify the fact.

The car was purchased by our vendor in 2020, and whilst in his enthusiastic ownership has had the starter motor rebuilt, fully serviced and the carburettor tuned. He uses the 20hp occasionally for events and days out where it cruises all day comfortably at 45mph with good oil pressure and a steady temperature. It's accompanied by large files of correspondence, invoices, service records and history details.

Delightfully original, both inside and out, and in outstanding condition, 77A6 is a well cared for example looking forward to her 100th birthday.
